Watch ‘Doctor Who’ Xmas Special in Cinemas Dec. 27

Once the gifts have been unwrapped (and subsequently returned), the leftovers reduced to increasingly less creative recipes, and the tree untrimmed, Doctor Who fans can relive Christmas with a one-night-only cinematic showing of “Twice Upon a Time.”

The holiday special, airing on BBC and BBC America on Dec. 25 (don’t forget the tissues), makes its big-screen debut two days later, hosted by Fathom Events on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. local time.

According a leaked synopsis, the Yuletide episode will reportedly feature a darker hue than previously expected, set in a “forbidding snowscape” during the First World War.

Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay, this “magical last chapter in the Twelfth Doctor’s epic adventure” marks the end for much of the cast and crew, including long-time showrunner Moffat, actor Peter Capaldi, and writer Mark Gatiss (who stars as a British army captain).

Refusing to regenerate in season 10 finale “The Doctor Falls,” the Twelfth Time Lord steps out of his TARDIS and into the snow, where he meets the First Doctor, portrayed by David Bradley.

Together with some old friends—Ben Jackson (Jared Garfield), Polly Wright (Lily Travers), the deliciously daring Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), and maybe even former companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman)—the pair must save the world before each takes a new shape: Bradley into Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, and Capaldi into Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker.

“The regeneration of the Doctor is a must-see event for Doctor Who fans around the world,” Sergei Kuharsky, executive vice president of BBC Worldwide North America franchise and digital enterprises, said in a statement.

“To be able to feature ‘Twice Upon a Time’ in theaters across the US … gives fans another chance to celebrate Peter Capaldi as the Doctor,” he added. “And who wouldn’t want to watch this historic emergence of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor on the big screen?”

Tune in on Christmas day to see Team TARDIS in action. And visit the multiplex on Dec. 27 (leftover-ham sandwich smuggled in your bag) to do it all over again—this time followed by two “special bonus pieces,” taking audiences behind the scenes of the festive adventure, and celebrating the four- and seven-year tenures of Capaldi and Moffat, respectively.

Tickets go on sale Oct. 20; prices and participating theaters will be available then on the Fathom Events website.

Fans, meanwhile, can already pre-order a copy of the “Twice Upon a Time” Blu-ray or DVD, set for release on Feb. 20.
